It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of underground cartoonist Spain Rodriguez on November 28th, 2012. Born here in Buffalo, his notoriety grew in the late 60s as a contributor to the NYC tabloid East Village Other, where introduced Trashman, his most iconic character. His work in comics voiced a perspective that advocated for revolutionary social change.
Rodriguez explored a wide range of artistic activity including murals, illustration, set design and even early web comics. Patrick Rozenkranz best describes his work in his obituary at TCJ.com.
If you are interested in seeing the works of this uniquely talented man, the Burchfield Penney Art Center is hosting a retrospect of his work through January 20, 2013.
